The Lab

In Tom Morgan's laboratory we mainly focus on the experimental recurrence spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms and molecules. These Rydberg species have high energy levels and are quite large. In the absence of electric field permutations these orbits are generally stable and easy to identify, especially in the atomic case. We choose to complicate the system by studying large orbits of simple molecules in the presence of an electric field. In this case we can observe the Stark effect, which enriches the orbital dynamics of the electron. By analyzing the closed orbits of these electrons we can more fully understand the relationship between classical and quantum mechanics.
