Pile driver

Drop mass m down chute, starting from rest, onto a nail partly driven into board. Measure:
  s=distance of fall
  d=distance nail is pushed in(in one strike)

  1. change in momentum of mass m during stopping process
  2. avg. velocity of m (or nail) during stopping process
  3. stopping time t=d/v
  4. F=p/t

Good exercise in momentum-impulse, Newton's third law and review of basic kinematics

Some typical data:
m=1.15kg
s=.6m
d=.01m

v=3.5m/s
p3.6kg m/s
t=.01/1.7.006sec
F600N or about 60kg-wt
