one can slide the mass down a polished rod (about 0.8m) but with springs exerting a substantial frictional force (about 4.3 Newtons).
Velocity at bottom is about 1/3 of free fall value.
Good for talking about fricton and PE (and work) and KE
Use rubber tube bumper at bottom of drop!
