Elastic vs Inelastic Collisions

OR

The projectile of the blow gun is aimed at the block on a rolling cart

  a hole in one side has putty to hold the pellet, or use the pellet with sharp point

If it sticks, the impulse to the block p=mv
This is the inelastic case:

Vblockapproximatly><img src=p/m=(m/M)*V

If the block is turned, the pellet rebounds elasticly

p=2mv

Vblock(elastic)=2(m/M)V=2Vblock(inelastic)

The distance the cart rolls is a measure of Vblock

V²=Vo²+2as

s=V²/2a

V=0  Vo=Vblock
a is due to friction

Inelastic

si=Vin²/2a

Elastic

se=4Vin/2a4s

The block should roll 4X as far, but in practice it is about 2.5X
