Wesleyan
University is a small, highly selective liberal arts
university located in central Connecticut. The student body consists of
about 2700 undergraduates and 150 graduate students in Ph.D. programs
in the sciences. Active Ph.D. programs Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry and Physics
demonstrate Wesleyan's strong commitment to research as a means of
maintaining the highest quality faculty for the benefit of both the
graduate and undergraduate science education. The quality of the
liberal education at Wesleyan attracts many of the brightest students
in the country and the presence of competitive graduate research
efforts makes Wesleyan a unique alternative for graduate study.
Our department provides an educational opportunity for
students who are seeking a close working relationship with faculty and
fellow students. With 9 faculty and 12-15 graduate students, the
environment is supportive, without the competitive pressures found in
large, anonymous departments.
We have concentrated our research efforts in three
broad fields: atomic and molecular physics (experimental), condensed
matter physics (experimental) and nonlinear
dynamics/chaos/computational physics (theory). Within these areas, we
have small groups studying cutting-edge problems within a stimulating
collegial environment. Our focused Ph.D. program is tailored to the
individual and is designed to allow graduate students early involvement
in research with a faculty member.
