As part of the eesmartsTM energy education program, The United Illuminating Company (UI) and The Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) are proud to sponsor a middle school essay contest for grades six, seven and eight. The contest is part of a middle school curriculum supplement available to teachers at no cost.

Your students are invited to write a one- to two-page original essay. All participants will receive recognition, and winners will receive special awards. The contest is open to all students, but the judges will look for a demonstrated understanding of the energy lessons in the eesmarts middle school program.

To that end, we encourage you to use the eesmarts supplemental materials with your class and submit the evaluation form to UI.

"UI and CL&P are proud to support educational efforts in our state. We are committed to building relationships with the educational community that will foster an ethic of energy awareness and responsibility for the future."

Summer 2007

2007 Summer Energy Education Workshops
Forty-five teachers attended one of two workshops this summer to increase their knowledge of CT Framework topics: Integrating Science, eesmartsTM, and Mathematics, for teachers in Grades 4-5, July 24-26 at Wesleyan University, and Middle School Energy Education Workshop, for grade 6-8 teachers, August 8 at the CT Association of Schools in Cheshire.
Each workshop addressed grade-specific topics as outlined in the CT Science Framework relating to Energy, Energy Transfer and Transformations, Energy Conservation and Efficiency, and Science and Technology in Society. Elementary teachers focused on forms of energy, light bulbs, electricity and magnetism, and energy consumption and efficiency. Middle school teachers also looked at energy transformation, generators, energy sources, and electricity usage. Teachers first learned about the related science concepts and then engaged in
hands-on activities to reinforce the ideas using the scientific inquiry to explore basic phenomena.

Teachers were treated to breakfast and lunch, compliments of
eesmartsTM program sponsors, CT Light and Power Company and United Illuminating. They received CEUs for full participation, and free curriculum materials that have been designed for the eesmartsTM program specifically relating to the CT Framework and standards. Materials for grades 6-9 were revised in the spring, K-5 materials will be available beginning Fall 2007.

eesmartsTM is an education program funded by the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund
and administered by The Connecticut Light and Power Company and The United Illuminating Company.
