Summer 2008

2008 Summer Energy Education Workshops

Nearly 200 teachers attended one of several workshops this summer to increase their knowledge of CT Framework topics: Integrating Science, eesmartsTM, and Mathematics, for teachers in Grades 3-5, and Middle School Energy Education Workshop, for grade 6-9 teachers, held in two locations: June 19 & 20 at Noah Webster School in Hartford and July 8-10 at Wesleyan University. An Advanced Topics in Middle School Energy Education was held at Wesleyan on July 15 & 16. Pre-k through 2nd grade teachers attend workshops Basic Science and Energy held in Hartford on June 18 and at Wesleyan on July 22 - 24.

Each workshop addressed grade-specific topics as outlined in the CT Science Framework relating to Energy, Energy Transfer and Transformations, Energy Conservation and Efficiency, and Science and Technology in Society. Elementary teachers focused on forms of energy, light bulbs, electricity and magnetism, and energy consumption and efficiency. Middle school teachers also looked at energy transformation, generators, energy sources, and electricity usage. Teachers first learned about the related science concepts and then engaged in
hands-on activities to reinforce the ideas using the scientific inquiry to explore basic phenomena.

Teachers were treated to breakfast and lunch, compliments of eesmartsTMprogram sponsor, The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund.. They received CEUs for full participation, and free curriculum materials that have been designed for the eesmartsTMprogram specifically relating to the CT Framework and standards.
