PIMMS Receives Platinum Award for Excellence
DanDolan, PIMMS; Sheila Carmine, CQIA President;
Shelly Jones, Wilma Toney, and Robert Rosenbaum, PIMMS.
On October 5, PIMMS received the CT Innovation Platinum Award
at the CT Quality Improvement Awards (CQIA) Partnership 13th
Annual Conference. One hundred eighty representatives from business,
industry, health care, and educational organizations in Connecticut
attended the conference.
For the first time in history, CQIA examiners awarded the Platinum CT
Innovation Prize. PIMMS joined City Bank and the CT Department of Labor
as the 2000 Winners. PIMMS was awarded this recognition for its five-year
professional development program in Bridgeport that resulted in
significant increases in student achievement on the mathematics section
of the CT Mastery Test. The program, which began with one workshop in
1996 with an enrollment of 28 teachers, increased to six workshops and
academic year follow-ups sessions for 140 teachers in 1999. The percentage
increase for Bridgeport students achieving the state goal more than
doubled the statewide percentage increase in each of grades 4, 6 and 8.

PIMMS Develops District Leaders
The first summer program for the two-year PIMMS Mathematics
and Science Leadership Institute was held from July 10-27, 2000.
Forty teachers comprising twelve district teams ranging in size from two
to six were selected to attend the program. All areas of the State were
represented and district size ranged from small (New Hartford) to
large (Bridgeport). One regional team included teachers from a high
school, middle school, and two elementary schools.
The instructional team consisted of four PIMMS Fellows:
Eileen Bengtson, Elementary Science Leader in Weston; Heather Giancola,
Elementary Mathematics Director in Darien; Frank Corbo, District
Mathematics Coordinator in Westport; and Fred Myers, Science Department
Chairman at Farmington High School. The three-week summer program
included seminars and lectures on important topics in mathematics and
science education, workshops on strategies for integrating technology,
and selected mathematics and/or science classroom activities.
