"Do It In The Dark" Challenges Wood-Frames to Save

A competition among the wood-frame houses has been organized by the Environmental Organizer's Network (EON), a student run organization. Over the spring semester the house that reduces its energy the most compared to the previous semester will win a "night on the town" good at any Middletown area restaurant (valued at $40 per person).  The competition will use data gathered by Physical Plant on energy usage (electricity, heating oil and water).  The house that shows the greatest improvement in energy efficiency between fall semester and spring semester will win.  The competition goes from January 24 to May 8.  The competition only measures the change in energy usage for each house rather than the houses competing against each other.  Factors such as house size, differences in insulation, age of the windows, number of residents and other factors make competing against each other impossible to measure.

Some discussion has taken place about such a competition for residence halls, or units within residence halls.  Unfortunately, not all the dorms are metered separately for water, electricity and steam heat.  This makes it impossible to get an accurate measure of the change in energy usage.

Periodic updates on the progress of the competition will be posted on this site.

All Electronic Payroll Initiative Has 250 Turning Off Paper Printing

The fall semester initiative to encourage students, faculty and staff to turn off the printing of paper pay statements resulted in 250 employees going totally electronic.  Through the ADP iPay web site, all employees (including students) can get a PDF copy of their pay statement for every payroll.  The electronic pay statements remain on-line for three years.  A few weeks ago, employees with iPay accounts received access to the 2006 W-2 form on the web site before they were mailed.  The electronic W-2 is an exact PDF copy of the paper W-2 and can be used for tax filing.

Students and other employees can go totally paperless at any time.  Click Here to see full details on how to go paperless.

Project $AVE – Submit Your Ideas

We want your good ideas for saving money and improving efficiency!!  Special gifts will be awarded to the best ideas submitted during the Fall 2006 semester.

We want ideas from all parts of campus, whether big or small.  The more ideas, the more we save and the better we all get at doing our jobs

You submit a money saving or efficiency idea on the Project $AVE web site
The Review Team will read all the ideas (see the Who We Are link to view the members of the Review Team). If we need expertise in reviewing the idea for viability, we will consult with the right person on campus that can help us.
Once the Review Team determines the idea has merit (whether we ultimately implement it or not), we will post the idea to the Project $AVE web site (see the Responses link).
Ideas will be assigned to the appropriate office or person on campus to plan a solution and implementation, or to provide a more detailed response.
We will periodically update the status of all ideas on the web site as we work on them.
If you have any questions or comments, contact us at: projectsave@wesleyan.edu

MISSION:

Project $AVE is an initiative to collect, review and implement new ideas for sustained cost savings and improved efficiencies throughout the Wesleyan Community.  A standing Review Team will evaluate all the suggestions submitted.  Members of the Community outside the Review Team who have relevant expertise in the topic of the suggestion may be asked to assist in appraising the idea and providing details on how it can be implemented.  All reasonable suggestions will be posted on this web site and we will keep the community informed of the status of ideas as we evaluate and implement them.
