Fire Safety & Procedures On Campus

Welcome

The majority of buildings on campus are equipped with alarm systems, including pull boxes, smoke detectors, fire doors, and/or fire-warning alarms.  These systems report directly to the Middletown Fire Department, which is located on Cross Street.  Once a system has been activated, the Middletown Fire Department will respond directly to that building.  In case of an alarm in any of Wesleyan's buildings, occupants should immediately leave the building.  Do no re-enter until Public Safety or the Fire Department authorizes it.

In residence halls, fire-protection systems include sensitive smoke detectors, which will activate the system at the slightest touch.  Each individual student residence hall room is also equipped with a local smoke detector similar to those in many homes.  These detectors activate locally and do not report to the local fire department.

Systematic inspections of the University facilities and equipment are conducted to locate and eliminate any fire hazards.  We request that you report any fire hazards to Public Safety immediately.

To report a fire in a University building:

  1. activate the pull station or pull box;

  2. evacuate the building; and

  3. put out the fire with an extinguisher if possible without jeopardizing your own safety and call Public Safety.

Fire extinguisher use:  The mnemonic P-A-S-S can be used to assist in the operation of a fire extinguisher

P = Pull.  Pull the pin.  some units require releasing of a lock or stop latch by pressing a lever.

A = Aim.  Aim the extinguisher nozzle.

S = Squeeze.  Squeeze or pull/press the handle.

S = Sweep.  Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until it is out.  If it does not respond immediately, leave the area and call for help.

All fires, even if burned out prior to discovery, must be reported to the Office of Public Safety at 685-3333 or on-campus extension 3333 and to the Middletown Fire Department.
