Bicycle Security

Welcome

The number of bikes on campus has risen as has the value of the average bicycle. Concomitantly, the number of bikes stolen on campus has increased, with mountain bikes and other touring styles are the main targets.  Most of those stolen are unsecured or secured with cable or chain and a padlock.  The Office of Public Safety recommends a hardened bar or horseshoe type locking device.  Many good locks of this type are on the market and, as a service and proactive method of reducing this type of larceny, Public Safety sells a medium grade bar lock to students at a reasonable price. For further information, contact Public Safety at 685-2345 or stop by the office located at 208 High Street.

For your bike security and convenience, the University has placed numerous bike racks throughout campus. In conjunction with a recommended lock, use of these facilities will decrease the likelihood of your bicycle being stolen.

If you bring a bicycle to campus:

  • Register your bicycle with Public Safety

  • Engrave your bicycle with your Driver's License number (for more information see Operation I.D.)

  • Use a good horseshoe bar style lock and lock it according to the instructions

  • Always lock your bicycle preferably to a bike rack. If permitted by Residential Life, keep the bike in your residence hall room

  • Be alert to suspicious activity near bike storage areas. Call Public Safety.
