If
you smell smoke, do not open your door until you touch it with
your hand. if it is hot, leave it closed. This
indicates that the heat in the hall is too intense for
survival. In that case, use another exit, if possible, or go
to the window and call for help. Hang something out the
window to attract the attention of the fire department.
If
a door is not too hot and you can open it, do so slowly by bracing
yourself against the door to make sure there is no heat or heavy
smoke on the other side. If there is, close the door
quickly. If there is smoke in your room or office, get
close to the floor and, if possible, open the window from the top
to allow smoke and heat to escape, and from the bottom to allow
incoming fresh air.
Do
not use an elevator. Walk swiftly to the nearest
exit. Do not run, shove, or push. If that exit is
blocked, proceed calmly to the nearest alternative exit. if
all exits are blocked, return to your room or office, close the
door, placing wet towels or rugs along the opening at the bottom,
and open the window as described above. Try to attract the
attention of those outside the building by waving a towel and/or
shouting.
If
you are not in your room or office at the time of an alarm, go
immediately to the nearest exit.
All
occupants should assemble outside the building.
Face
away from the building to avoid possible flying glass.
Do
not return to your room or office for any reason until authorized
by the fire department or Public Safety.
Pre-plan
your escape; if you know the escape routes and exits, you can
avoid crowded main exits.
If
you become trapped:
-
Do
not panic -- stop and think.
-
Crawl
close to the floor.
-
Put
a closed door between you and the smoke.
-
Signal
for help from a window.
-
Use
a telephone to let emergency responders know where you are --
call Public Safety at extension 3333.
