Fire Safety Standards

Welcome

  • Fire doors in halls and stairwells must be kept closed at all times

  • Bicycles or other obstructions must not be left in halls or doorways.  (They will be removed at the owner's expense.)

  • In case of fire, the alarm should be activated and the building evacuated immediately.  Pull the alarm before attempting to extinguish any fire.

  • A fire extinguisher should never be used for any purpose other than extinguishing a fire.  All discharges of fire extinguishers must be reported to the Public Safety Office immediately (call 685-3333 or on-campus extension 3333).

  • Always close and lock the door to your room when you go to bed.  Rising heat and toxic gases can be fatal to sleeping persons.

  • Know the locations of all fire exits, fire doors, and fire extinguishers.  Plan your escape routes!

  • Extinguish all cigarettes and matches in ashtrays.  Do not smoke in bed.

  • Do not string electrical wires or extension cords under rugs, over hooks, or in any place where they may generate heat and/or be subject to wear/damage.

  • Be extremely careful with any open flame (matches, lighters, etc.) as well as with appliances, irons, etc.
