Best known for Neon
Vernacular which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994, Yusef Komunyakaa is noted
for his use of surrealistic imagery, montage techniques, and folk idiom to focus
on his identity as an African American, his upbringing in the small community of
Bogalusa, Louisiana, and his experiences as a soldier during the Vietnam War.
His poems incorporate violence, death, racism, and poverty, and are often
infused with rage while invoking profound feelings of tenderness and hope.
Presenter: Yusef Komunyakaa is a Wesleyan University Press author
who won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. He is a professor in the Council of
the Humanities and Creative Writing Program at Princeton University and will
receive an honorary degree during Wesleyan’s 2003 Commencement.
