Couldn’t Keep It to Myself: Readings and Discussion
At the age of 40, with the ink barely dry on her Wesleyan diploma, Dale
Griffith ’92, took a teaching position at Niantic Correctional Institution,
where she created a writing center for female inmates convicted of crimes
ranging from credit card fraud to murder. Her students uncovered treasures
buried under piles of emotional and institutional rubble, and many found a
sense of worth by putting their stories on paper. In 1999, author Wally Lamb
volunteered to give a workshop to Griffith’s students; he was so moved that
he returned every two weeks, and alternate Thursdays became “Wally days.”
The outcome of that collaboration is a book, Couldn’t Keep It to Myself,
a compilation of stories of hope, humor, and triumph in the face of despair.
Come to hear readings from this book and a discussion of the impact of
writing on life.
