Thesis Art Exhibition

The Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery showcases the work of the Class of 2017’s thesis students in the Department of Art and Art History’s Art Studio Program. Each student is invited to select a single work from their Senior Thesis Exhibition for this year-end showcase of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and architecture curated by Professor of Art Tula Telfair. Co-Sponsored by University Relations. There will be a reception with refreshments in honor of the seniors Saturday, May 27, from 2–4 p.m

CONVERGING TO A CENTER: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE COLLECTION OF ANDREW SZEGEDY-MASZAK AND ELIZABETH BOBRICK

Photography has evolved dramatically since 1970, when Andrew Szegedy-Maszak started collecting. This exhibition at the Davison Art Center highlights thirty-three photographs acquired in the last two decades, photographs that reveal the shift from the intimate scale of small black and white (gelatin silver) prints to immersive large-scale color digital images. The exhibition includes photographs by Marion Belanger, Joe Deal, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Robert Frank, Richard Misrach, Sasha Rudensky, Jem Southam, Phiilip Trager, and others.

ALPHA DELTA PHI THROUGH THE DECADES

Since its formation in 1856, members of the Middletown Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi have demonstrated a continued support to members of Wesleyan University. Varied types of support have included hosting literary events, conducting community service programs, providing a dining space, offering student grants for financial assistance, and serving on the Wesleyan University Board of Trustees. This exhibit features items of interest from the recently processed records of Alpha Delta Phi and showcases just how this literary society gives back to Wesleyan University, the local community, and more.

Rick Nicita Gallery, Center for Film Studies

GARY COOPER: HOLLYWOOD STAR, AMERICAN HERO

Gary Cooper, Hollywood Star, American Hero in the Rick Nicita Gallery in the Center for Film Studies includes posters, photographs, and letters illustrating the long career of actor Gary Cooper.  Cooper’s career began in silent films in the 1920s, and continued through the early 1960s.  He received two Academy Awards for Best Acting (Sergeant York and High Noon), and a third honorary award shortly before his death in 1961.  Highlights in the gallery exhibit include a rare one sheet for A Farewell to Arms (1932), an art deco window card for Desire (1936), telegrams between Gary Cooper and director Frank Capra, and Cooper’s final letter to Capra.
