REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Preserving resources and reducing our harmful impact on the environment takes more than recycling. According to the EPA, Americans produce an average of 4.5 lbs of trash per day. Conduct a fearless inventory of your consumption habits. Check with the Wesleyan recycling coordinator or your local municipal coordinator about proper disposal of hazardous wastes.

How can I reduce my energy use?

  • Take shorter and fewer showers
  • Turn off lights not in use
  • Close windows when air conditioning is on
  • Repair heating/cooling/ electrical/plumbing problems
  • Turn off electronic equipment not in use
  • Don’t let water run while washing dishes and brushing teeth

  • Avoid items with excess packaging
  • Bring your own shopping bags
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • Buy in bulk
  • Use items in recyclable containers
  • Avoid disposables
  • Rinse containers after use, then recycle

  • Use double-sided copying whenever feasible

How can I promote reuse?

  • Reuse jars, bottles, and other containers when possible
