Introduction
Under the guidance of University Communications, the Web Design Team has prepared three design directions for the consideration of the Wesleyan Web Advisory Group (WWAG), senior staff, and the Wesleyan community at large. These designs will be presented in April. After seeking feedback from the community, we hope to narrow our work to a single design direction by April 30.
Our Process
Research
Based on our own research, talks with web teams at Amherst and Williams (with more schools to come), and an initial meeting with a student focus group organized through the WSA, we prepared some general guidelines for development of the new site:
- General design elements
- Homepage content and structure checklist
- Homepage user actions checklist
- Homepage user experience checklist
- Landing page checklist
- Universal navigation bar checklist
- University web sites consulted
Community
We have started a Redesign weblog to inform the Wesleyan community of our progress and to collect feedback. A message has been added to the top of our regular web pages to announce this (example). We are planning additional consultation via an online survey. We will also share our work with groups of prospective students (our primary audience) for their perspective and feedback.
Design Concepts
Above are sketches for three design directions (concept A, concept B, and concept C) based on our research and on the community feedback we have received to date. Each concept is comprised of three core pages for comparison purposes:
- University homepage sketch
- Major landing page sketch (Academics page)
- Administrative department homepage sketch (Registrar’s homepage)
- optional additional pages…
Demonstration and design notes are available on the main concept pages.
