The Wesleyan University
Program in Israel, is run at, and in consortium with, the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem (HUJ). This spring-semester program maintains
the high academic standards and dedication to a sound liberal arts
education for which its sponsoring institutions are known. The program
accepts a maximum of 20 students from Wesleyan University and
other colleges and universities. It runs from mid-January to early June,
and offers an ulpan (intensive Hebrew language program) followed
by matriculation at the HUJ and in program-run courses. Course credit
can be transferred easily to other colleges and universities. Every
effort is made to place students in courses from which they will receive
the maximum intellectual benefit.

Certificate in
Jewish and Israel Studies
Students with interest
in the Hebrew language and/or the Israeli culture are encouraged to pursue
The
Certificate in
Jewish and Israel Studies. Up to two courses in Hebrew
can be counted towards the seven course requirement of the Certificate.
Hebrew courses can be taken either from the language program or the
literature courses. Language courses include; Hebrew 101, Hebrew 102,
(Beginner level) Hebrew 201, Hebrew 202 (Intermediate level). Literature
courses are offered in Hebrew or in English.
Hebrew 211: is a
seminar which is conducted in a small group in Hebrew and is offered to
third year Hebrew students or students with the equivalent knowledge. The
emphasis in this course is on Modern Israeli literature which is studied
in the socio-political and cultural context.
The Advanced Hebrew Tutorial,
Hebrew 412 also concentrates on Modern Israeli literature and is
offered to students who took Hebrew 211 or with advanced knowledge of the
Hebrew language. However, the course , Religion 383, Contemporary Israeli
Fiction in Translation is offered in English and requires no prior
knowledge of the Hebrew language. All these courses are embedded within
the cultural context of Israel and therefore are most relevant to study
toward the Certificate in Jewish and Israel Studies.
