Room Selection Nights

The Room Selection Nights process is open to all eligible Wesleyan students who have not already committed to Program Housing, Community Based Living (CBLV), Copenhagens or Off-Campus housing for the following year. If you are participating in a study abroad or other off-campus academic program during the 2013 fall semester you are not eligible to participate in the GRS process. 

Group Size*
You must register to participate in Room Selection.  Students who register individually are considered a group (group of one). Since the size of available housing units differs for each class, the number of members in a group is determined by class rank. 

Rising Seniors (Class of 2014)

1 to 6 members

Rising Juniors (Class of 2015)

1 to 5 members

Rising Sophomores (Class of 2016) 

1 to 2 members

*Please note that if you are in a group of more than 1 and no smaller units available, your group has to select a unit that matches your group size if one is available.

When a group consists of mixed classes, the maximum number of members in a group is determined by the highest class in the group (i.e. a mixed group of rising seniors and rising juniors can have up to 6 people).  

Re-Configuring your Group
Sometimes a group needs to change its size after ranks have been run. We have implemented three ways to help students adjust their group size.

1. Facebook: Students can use the Residential Life Facebook page to try and locate potential roommates. Our Facebook page can be found by searching for "Wesleyan Office of Residential Life". 

2. Mix, Mingle, and Merge: A social held on April 5, 2013 from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Usdan 110. Students can meet each other and reconfigure their GRS groups to fit potential available units (i.e. seniors find out there are more 4-person groups than 4-person units, they find two people to merge into their group to make it a group of 6).

3. Suspended Selection Rule: If rising seniors need to add a rising junior(s) to their group to be able to select senior appropriate housing, they will forfeit their group rank and select at the end of the rising senior groups, rather than at the rank of the rising juniors who merge with them.

Group Score
When the group is larger than one, the mean score of the members determines the group's score.Points are assigned based on number of semesters completed in on-campus housing (semester(s) spent abroad are considered “on-campus semesters”).

For example, if four rising juniors select to go through the process as a group, their rank/point value will still be two (the total number of everyone’s scores divided by the number of people in the group (2+2+2+2=8 divided by 4=2). If a group of four consists of two rising sophomores and two rising juniors, their mean score would be 1.5. Rising sophomores select after the rising juniors, who select after the rising seniors.

All groups with the same point value are randomly ordered by a computer and assigned selection numbers , known as group ranks. The group rank will determine the order in which they will choose rooms on Room Selection nights.

Registering/Forming a Group

Before you can "Register a new group" or "Join a group" all students must complete the following:

  1. Click on "Housing Contract", read, and accept the housing contract.

  2. Click on "Lead Paint Notice", read, and accept the lead paint notice.

To register as an individual, click "Create a new group" (group of one). The blue status box will update with your number and a yellow box will appear under the blue box with your name as the group member.

To apply as a group of two or more individuals**:

  1. The first person to register via the website clicks "Register a new group" and is given a group I.D. 

  2. The I.D. is a number preceded by a prefix of "grs".  This number, including the "grs", is then shared with the others wishing to become a part of the group. 

  3. You must include the "grs" prefix for the system to recognize your group.  Everyone else that will be joining the group clicks on "Join a group".   

  4. Each student in your group must register separately. Each person will have the blue and yellow status boxes in the top left corner update with the GRS number and names of their group members.

    **If a group of two or more individuals is comprised of students of mixed classes, the first person to register the group must be of the highest class rank in the group.  For example, if the group consists of two rising seniors and three rising juniors, one of the rising seniors must be the first to register the group.  This will allow the group size to be greater than five.

You must register online by Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by 4 p.m.

Ranking of Groups:

After Wednesday, April 3, 2013 all groups or individuals with the same point value will be randomly sorted through an electronic process, and a group ranking will be determined. This group rank number will be communicated via an email on the afternoon of Thursday, April 4, 2013. The rank number determines the order in which groups/individuals will be able to make their room selection and which of the four room selection nights (April 8, 9, 11, 16) they will be asked to attend. E-mails will be sent by Thursday, April 4, 2013, informing groups of their assigned date and appointment time for selection.
