First Year Matters (FYM)

This year's First Year Matters program explores the challenges we face as we study, learn and begin to address the influence and impact humans have had on the planet. An exploration of the Anthropocene is the focus of this year's First Year Matters program, Wesleyan's answer to the "common reading" program instituted at many universities. In FYM:FTF Comparison, first-year students are guided through a common experience program, designed to introduce them to the academic rigor and interdisciplinary thinking at Wesleyan while at the same time building a community of learners. The program includes the selection of a faculty-led seminar each with a set of multi-disciplinary readings students complete during the summer, presentations and facilitated discussions during Orientation, and the staging of a major participatory arts event that engages students in understanding the issue from an arts perspective.

Please visit the First Year Matters page for more detailed and comprehensive information about this year's program.
