The Spanish section offers students two majors.  The Spanish major proper focuses on the language and literatures (and other Spanish-language arts, such as film) of the entire Spanish-speaking world.  It is the major at Wesleyan that best enables students interested in both Latin America and Spain (and, potentially, other Spanish-speaking countries) to integrate them fully into their major plan of study.  It is also the only major at Wesleyan in which all course work must be taken in Spanish.  As such the Spanish major ensures the most rigorous preparation for study or work abroad following graduation and for the kind of graduate or professional study in the U.S. that calls for fluency in Spanish.

The other major available, Iberian Studies, is designed for students who would prefer 1) a greater though not exclusive focus on Spain (and Portugal) and 2) the opportunity to count up to four courses in English and in fields other than literature (such as history, economics, sociology, government, or art history) toward the major.  It is intended for those students in the Spanish section who seek a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to the study of a Spanish-speaking country (with an emphasis on Spain).
