Service-Learning and Volunteer or Community Service share the activity of giving service to local groups and agencies.  Service-Learning, however, uses this activity as part of a planned curriculum, a tool to advance and deepen the students’ knowledge of an academic field of study and capacity for critical thinking. Through grounding in a relevant literature, class work and course assignments, and structured reflection, service in a Service-Learning course becomes a component of an overall course of academic study.
