Dwight Greene '70 Intern
Housed
within the Office for Diversity and Academic Advancement, the Dwight
Greene ‘70 intern creates and implements programs that foster Beverly
Daniel Tatum’s ’74 ABCs for Engagement. The ABCs are: Affirming
Identities as a necessary prerequisite for building community,
Building Community through complex and difficult dialogues to
increase our collective sphere of influence, and Cultivating
Leadership in individuals to lead by example and in the service of
social justice. This internship is a 12-month position, but it only
requires that the intern telecommute during the summer for 2-5 hours per
week. The intern will be expected to arrive on campus prior to new
student orientation, which begins on August 26, 2008. Work hours during
the academic year will be approximately 10 hours per week. The intern
will work closely with the Dean for Diversity and Academic Advancement
to implement WesConnects. This is a mentoring program designed to
cultivate a network of support that recognizes and affirms the complex
identities and multiple meanings associated with the concept of Student
of Color (SOC) and foster relationships among incoming and returning
students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Additional responsibilities are
provided below.
Responsibilities Include:

Assist with planning the SOC and Alumni of Color session during
orientation 2008 held in August;

Enhance the available career resources on positions linked to social
justice and diversity
-
Assist with the development of materials, infrastructure, and
assessment for WesConnects;

Assist with the selecting of mentors and other volunteers;
-
Develop a culture of collaboration and community among mentors,
underclass students, and allies across campus;
-
Perform other similar and related duties as assigned;
Qualifications:
-
Sophomore, junior, or senior
-
Excellent communication skills, organizational abilities, and time
management skills
-
Demonstrated leadership ability, maturity, and self-motivation
-
Ability to work effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff
populations
-
Commitment to and knowledge of SOC community
-
Capacity for discretion and confidentiality when working with
students and administrators
-
Team-oriented
-
Knowledge and experience with current administrative software: (ie:
MS Word, Excel, Internet browsers, etc)
-
Ability to work flexible hours (2-5 hours per week during the summer
10 hours per week during the academic year)

be able to make a full year commitment
