Student of Color Coalition Intern

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development is looking for a responsible, resourceful, dedicated student to help fulfill our mission of promoting student involvement and leadership development and to provide valuable student input in our initiatives.  The Intern will provide peer assistance and support to Wesleyan’s various multicultural/ethnic organizations.  In particular, the Intern will offer advocacy and support to student organizations and should have knowledge and a commitment to broader issues of social justice and the intersections of identities, and will work to build bridges between different identity groups.

The Intern will also co-chair the Student of Color Coalition (SCC) including coordination of meetings throughout the year.  The SCC is a group intended to bring together different student leaders of color in one space to share resources and promote dialogue.

In some cases, the intern will assist in events promotion while in other cases may need to actively participate in the groups’ program development, and advise and encourage the use of campus resources.

Additional Duties May Include:

  • Maintain a student organization informational database, directory, and webpage

  • Assist in the development of a resource guide for organizations

  • Attend a variety of student planning meetings

  • Aid student organizations in various capacities such as assistance with event publicity

  • Collaborate with other Program Interns

  • Perform other similar and related duties as assigned

  • Meet with the Dean of the College or other staff as needed

Qualifications:

  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate with administrators and peers
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student, faculty and staff populations
  • Strong organizational abilities and time management skills
  • Capacity for discretion and confidentiality when working with students and administrators
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and maturity
  • Demonstrated a strong commitment to the student of color community and broader issues of social justice
  • Self motivator
  • Computer proficiencies:  (i.e.: MS Word, Excel, Internet browsers, etc)

  • Ability to work flexible hours (10 hours per week)
  • Hold two office hours weekly at the University Organizing Center
  • Must be able to make a full year commitment
