University Organizing Center
Internship
The University Organizing Center (UOC) is a student
space that was founded in 2004. The intern's main role is to continue to
build the Organizing Center as a central space for activism, organizing,
and anti-oppression work. This position requires a commitment to
grassroots organizing and a dedication to understanding and dismantling
intersecting oppressions based on race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, size, nationality, etc. While there are some specific
duties associated with this position, one of the most important
qualifications for the intern is the ability to think critically and
creatively about developing the UOC as a student space centered on
community building, self-determination, and collective action.
Duties:
- Maintain and develop the UOC as a student space for organizing,
activism, and self- and peer-education.
- Maintain and expand the Anti-Oppression Library in the UOC.
- Plan and hold events in the Organizing Center to bring students
together and raise campus awareness of the space.
- Coordinate and maximize usage of the space: network with campus
groups to encourage them to use the UOC, ascertain and work to meet
the needs of those using the space, keep track of weekly usage
schedule.
- Provide peer assistance and support to campus affinity groups and
organizations.
- Collect and make available resources to help students become
better organizers (workshops, speakers, books, tips exchanged
between students, etc).
- Coordinate with other Dean's Office Interns, student groups, and
student leaders for programming, coalition-building, etc.
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills
- Knowledge of and interest in activist organizing.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse students, faculty,
and staff
- Strong organizational abilities and time management skills
- Capacity for discretion and confidentiality when working
with students and administrators
- Demonstrated leadership skills and maturity
- Ability to work independently and to work flexible hours
- Availability to serve as an intern for the entire 2008-2009
academic year.
