Transportation Initiatives at Wesleyan

We’ve Done It

Listed below are green initiatives that have been implemented.

  Initiative Notes
1 Wesleyan utilizes four electric vehicles for facilities management, mail services, waste management, and recycling.  
2 ITS has developed a Wesleyan Ride Board to facilitate carpools to and from campus, as well as employee commuting. Launched in March 2008
3 The transportation subcommittee has calculated green house gas emissions for campus fleet vehicles and faculty, staff, and student commuters.  
4 The transportation subcommittee has identified towns from which employees commute and mileage from Wesleyan to identify where the biggest green house gas emission reductions can be achieved.  

 

We’re Working On It

Listed below are initiatives that have been assigned to a person or office to plan a solution.

  Initiative Status
1

A new purchasing policy will require that all vehicles purchased by Wesleyan University must be low emissions vehicles (gas-electric hybrids, electric vehicles, or alternative fuel vehicles), unless it is absolutely necessary that a less fuel-efficient vehicle be purchased (to be reviewed by the sustainability committee).

 
2 Marketing the "Easy Street" commuter van service to Wesleyan faculty and staff in order to reduce the number of cars commuting to campus and their associated emissions.  
3 Examining biking alternatives to vehicle use on and near campus. This includes exploring the feasibility of implementing a bike sharing program on campus  
4 Exploring how to purchase "carbon offsets" to counter greenhouse gas emissions associated with university air travel. .  
5 Drafting a transportation sustainability policy that will document subcommittee goals and objectives. .  

 

We’re Getting to It

Listed below are initiatives that are in the evaluation stage to determine the best way to accomplish them.

  Initiative Status
1 Evaluating the most accurate method(s) to estimate greenhouse gas emissions associated with university business-related air travel.  
2 Evaluating economic feasibility of implementing "Zip Car" service at Wesleyan.  
3 Evaluating economic feasibility of using current Wesleyan shuttle van fleet for employee commuting purposes.
