RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Joe Drury's research deals with the relations between literary form and the history of science and technology. He is currently working on a book, THE MACHINE IN THE NOVEL: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND CULTURE IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY BRITAIN, which explores the ways in which the rise of the machine in pre-industrial Britain - new mechanistic sciences as well as new technologies - spurred formal innovation in narrative fiction.
