Gangster and Crime Films

The crime film has been a center of social contention and stylistic experimentation both in Hollywood and internationally throughout film history. This course will explore the gangster and crime film from early cinema to the present. We will explore changing production cycles, including classic gangster films, film noir, and neo-noir. We'll also consider how the crime film has been taken up in various cultures and film movements, in places such as France, Hong Kong, Italy, and Russia. Our study will touch on issues such as censorship, immigration, ethnicity, gender, crime in the new Hollywood, and the history and conventions of film genre.

Readings will included: Steve Neale, Genre and Hollywood; Jonathan Munby, Public Enemies, Public Heroes; Frank Krutnik, In a Lonely Street: Film Noir, Genre, Masculinity; Paul Schrader, "Notes on Film Noir," Dashiell Hammett, Red Harvest; David Bordwell, Planet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment; Richard Martin, Mean Streets and Raging Bulls: The Legacy of Film Noir in Contemporary American Cinema; additionally, a course reader will be available for purchase at PIP Printing in Middletown. We will analyze films such as The Great Train Robbery (Porter), Alias Jimmy Valentine (Tourneur), Public Enemy (Wellman), Double Indemnity (Wilder), Le Samourai (Melville), Tokyo Drifter (Suzuki), The Godfather (Coppola), The Killer (Woo), Fireworks (Kitano), Goodfellas (Scorsese), and Out of Sight (Soderberg).

Evaluation will be based on the student's contribution to class discussions and on reading reports on the course materials. Students will also complete a semester long research project that will involve several short written assignments and will culminate in an in-class presentation and a paper.

There will be a reading assignment for the first meeting of class.


Sara Ross(B.A., M.A., Ph.D. University of Wisconsin) teaches film studies at University of Hartford and Quinnipiac University. Her recent publications include "The Americanization of Tsuru Aoki: Orientalism, Melodrama, Star Image and the New Woman," Camera Obscura (2005)
