Pictures from Home: Photographing the Domestic Landscape

07/04/2011 - 07/21/2011
Monday-Thursday 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM

Art Workshop 112

Special Schedule: Three Week Course - July 4-July 21 - July 4th Holiday makeup class will be held Friday, July 8 from 2:00-5:00

After spending years documenting public life, photographers were invited into the home and turned their attention toward the intimate, the loving, the terrifying, and revealing nature of the domestic landscape. We will start the course by closely studying photographs included in "Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort" - the seminal show curated by Peter Galassi at MOMA in 1991. Then we will examine more in depth the work of Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Doug DuBois, Tina Barney and others.

All this will serve as inspiration and background for what will be a personal project that each student will undertake for the duration of the course. After the first week, which will include a brief review of Photoshop techniques (including digital workflow, color correcting, making selections, working with layers, and archival inkjet printing), each student will be asked to come up with a proposal for a photographic project they will shoot for the rest of the class.

Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

This course is not open to auditors.

Additional Course Fee: $175

The deadline to withdraw and receive a tuition refund for this course is Wednesday, July 6 at 5:00 pm. Please visit our website for a complete list of registration and withdrawal dates for this session.
