Applied Data Analysis - Foundational Course

Applied Data Analysis offers students the opportunity to develop their ability to manage and analyze data. Students who work in data-driven fields such as education, health care, nonprofits, or many other areas, are welcome to analyze their own data sets from their work. Students may also choose a research question from data provided by the instructor. Data sets available for this course include Connecticut Mastery Test performance data, National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), National Epidemiologic Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) and Gapminder (gapminder.org).

This combination lecture and hands-on laboratory course provides direct experience in data management and applied statistics. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in several aspects of the research process including generating testable hypotheses based on existing data; preparing data for analysis; selecting and conducting descriptive and inferential statistical analyses; and presenting research findings.

This course provides training in SAS, a major statistical analysis software and is aimed at empowering students to manage and analyze large data sets. SAS is available in the cloud, so students will be able to access this software from their own computers anywhere. Translational materials will be available for R (free software environment for statistical computing and graphics), Stata, and SPSS, so that students will be able to easily move into additional software in the future.

Foundational Course: This course is considered a foundational course for students concentrating in mathematics and sciences, and is also very helpful for students in social sciences. It is designed to help students hone the quantitative analysis and scientific thinking skills that are necessary for graduate work in these fields.

This course will be cross-listed as MTHS 683W and SCIE 683W. Please take care to enroll in the proper section of the course.

Enrollment in the two sections combined is limited to 20 students.

Lisa Dierker (B.A.Ohio State University, Ph.D.University of Connecticut) is Professor and Chair of Psychology and Chair of the Quantitative Analysis Center. Her research on the development of nicotine dependence and other substance use disorders is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
