In this psychology course, we will study social and cognitive development across the life span. Topics include life-span attachment issues (e.g., early parent-child relationships); developmental psychopathology; distinctions between individual difference and psychopathology; normative and atypical emotional development; the development of self, identity, and personality; different approaches to cognitive functioning; gender, sexuality, and cultural issues in life-span development; social relations (peers, friends, school, work); late adulthood issues of aging and dying; and a general focus on the overall sources of developmental continuities and discontinuities.
Readings for this course will include A Topical Approach to Life-Span Development, as well as a reading packet of chapters and articles.
Grades will be based on a 12-15 page term paper and an oral presentation.
This course is not open to auditors.
This course is offered during the 3 Week Intensive session; the deadline to withdraw and receive a tuition refund is Wednesday, June 30 at 5:00 pm.

William Arsenio (B.A. Brandeis University; M.A. University of California, Berkeley; Ph.D. Stanford University) is head ot he Developmental Psychology Program at Ferkauf Graduate School, Yeshiva University. He is a prolific writer in his field, with 4 articles currently in press and another 16 published recently. He is also an active speaker, having presented 16 papers during the past 9 years.
