Molecular biology is a fast-moving, experimentally-driven discipline that continues to shed light on the underlying mechanisms that drive biological processes. Over the past few decades, technological advances in the molecular biosciences have led scientists to profound discoveries in disciplines ranging from anthropology to veterinary sciences. This will be an intensive and comprehensive laboratory course that covers several of the experimental techniques used in modern molecular biology. Students will gain firsthand laboratory experience in the use of recombinant DNA technology, protein expression and purification, gel electrophoresis, the polymerase chain reaction, and microbial genetics (the relationship between genotype and phenotype). E. coli and budding yeast will be used as model prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The days will include laboratory exercises as well as lectures on the relevant background material, including basic molecular biology, genetics, genes and genomes, and introductory bioinformatics.

Readings will be from Watson, Gilman, Witkowski and Zoller, RECOMBINANT DNA (W. H. Freeman & Co.).

The course will be well-suited for science enthusiasts who possess the foundational vocabulary of biology, and for high school science teachers. The course will cover material and topics that may be adapted to the high school classroom setting. Additional course fee: $75.

Michael McAlear (B.S., Ph.D. McGill University) is associate professor of molecular biology and biochemistry. His research focuses on DNA replication, DNA repair, and rRNA metabolism in yeast, and his articles have appeared in the journals Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics, Molecular Genetics, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
