Europe's Long 19th Century: From the French Revolution to World War I

This study of European history from the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 to the eve of World War I, is divided into two segments. The first of these, dealing with the period 1789-1848, offers analysis of the dramatic forces of change unleashed by the French and industrial revolutions; the vigorous, hostile responses to both revolutions; and the unanticipated results of European-wide revolution in 1848. The second segment, which spans the years from 1848 to 1914, emphasizes the emergence of nations, national leaders, nationalism, and the origins of World War I, and social discord and the growth of socialist and working-class movements. Our attention will be given throughout the course only to France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Russia, since our time will not permit attention to other areas.

Readings will be chosen from several sources, and John Merriman, A History Of Modern Europe: Volume II, From The French Revolution To The Present will serve as a basic textbook. Additional studies include E. J. Hobsbawm, The Age Of Revolution, 1789-1848; and James Joll, The Origins of the First World War.

Two take-home examination papers will be required.

There is no prerequisite study in European history required for this course, and students who have undertaken partial study of this period are welcome.

Enrollment is limited to 18 students.

This course is open to auditors.
