Sustainability Facts
Did you know?
-
The
use of sustainable materials added $3 million to building costs
during the construction of the Usdan / Fayerweather buildings.
-
Some environmentally friendly features of
the building include: variable flow stove-exhaust hoods that ramp up in
response to heat and or smoke as opposed to running on full all day
long. Cooler condensers will produce hot water as a by product of their
operation, this hot water will be used to pre-heat sink water for hand
washing.

-
There are energy efficient features throughout the buildings such as: automatic dimming and temperature
control systems, energy efficient fluorescent lights, and an impervious
roof made of natural shale.
-
The Usdan Center was purposely sited to the southwest, taking advantage of
the sunlight for passive solar energy. Trees were also planted to
provide heat screening in the summer.
-
A light dimming system
was installed in both buildings to ensure lights cannot be turned up
to 100 percent. This increases bulb life and reduces energy costs.
The dimming system also adjusts the lights
based on the ambient daylight entering the room.
-
Throughout Usdan and Fayerweather light occupancy sensors determine if
spaces are being used and can shut lights off if no movement is sensed.
-
There
is 50,000 feet of radiant heat tubing in Fayerweather, Usdan and at the
loading dock to provide interior radiant heating and snow melt at the
loading dock. This system puts heat where you need it so it saves
energy.
