From Ujamaa to President Bennet
President Bennet:
On behalf of Ujaama, I, Chaya Braxton, co-political chair of Ujaama, want to express our discomfort with the present injustices that Latino janitors confront on a daily basis on Wesleyan' campus.
There seems to be a history of these type of offences over the past year. Our organization has consistently expressed our discontent with the way in which our fellow poeple of color are treated in this community. In the spirit of the message sent to you from Ajua Campos, we would like to know, when will this stop? When will students of color feel comfortable enough to know that our own people of color who sweat to maintain the well-being of our campus be treated with dignity and respect.
This situation embarrasses us to a great degree and also challenges the intergrity of this institution, displaces the students of color on this campus and clouds Wesleyan's own vision of diversity as we move into the next millenium.
As members of the board, as disturbed students and also as people who must see a difference in this situation, we ask you to listen to the grievances of these workers. We want it to stop.
Very Concerned,
Chaya Braxton
Ujamaa representative
