 From the Wesleyan Student Assembly to President Bennet Dear President Bennet- The following resolution was passed by the Wesleyan Student Assembly on Febuary 6, 2000. It was passed unanimously. WHEREAS, 24 out of 29 Initial Janitors at Wesleyan receive wages below the poverty line of $8.00/hour. WHEREAS, none of the janitors receive such benefits as health care, pension, and paid vacation. WHEREAS, many of our peer institutions, including Trinity, Fairfield, and Harvard have adopted policies to ensure that all subcontracted workers on their campus receive a living wage, BE IT RESOLVED THAT Wesleyan University should take responsibility for its subcontracted workers on this campus, including the Initial janitors, hand support the right to a living wage and basic worker benefits.
