Apentemma

A single-headed carved wood drum found in West Africa among the Ashanti people of central and western Ghana. It features elaborate carved designs around the shell and a symbolic "eye" with a contrasting pattern carved halfway up the drum signifying the place where the spirit of the drum is said to reside. It is played with the hands sounding open and muted tones of a basic rhythmic phrase and its variations.
