The "Bayles" bass is a three-quarter, gamba-shaped, flatback model bass violin of Markneukirchen, German origin. The top table is a two-piece plate of vertical grained spruce. The back table is a two-piece plate of maple with the ribs of matching character to the back table. The neck and scroll are of beechwood. The gears are plain brass plate tuning gears. The color of the varnish is a reddish amber.

Body length: 41 1/4 inches
Width of upper, center, and lower bowls: 20 3/4 inches, 15 inches, 25 inches.

The bass was acquired by the generous donation of Sarah Bayles.
