Abstract:

Queer students have of course been active at Wesleyan since the very beginnings of the institution, but only in the 1970's did the queer men and women of Wesleyan organize themselves for social and political purposes. From the early "Gay Alliance" to today's Queer Alliance, the queer community at Wesleyan has been marked by rapid expansion and a willingness to redefine itself. Although marked by fragmentation, internal dissent, and occasionional hostilities from the surrounding communities of Wesleyan and Middletown, the overall queer experience at Wesleyan in the last twenty-five years have been mostly positive, a tribute both to our institution's tolerance and the queer community's efforts to make it more so.
