History Tutorial April 21
Consider taking a student-run tutorial on the history of student life at Wesleyan next semester.  There will be a meeting this Friday at 3PM in Olin's Rare Book room.   Interested? Contact Roger Smith.   Here's more info:

What did your student group do before you got involved?
How did relations with Middletown get to be so screwed up?
Was there really a KKK rally in Meriden 20 years ago?
Why was Chase's office firebombed?
What has student environmentalism looked like in the past?
How have humor mags at Wesleyan changed throughout the years?
What happened to Wesleyan's fine Methodist tradition?
What is all of this student art/photography sitting in the archives? Want to make an exhibit of it?
The topic of your research is up to you.
We will be meeting this Friday in Olin's Rare Book Room (first floor) to discuss what topics are feasible with Prof. Johnston of the History dept and Jeffrey Makala of the Archives.
If you're interested or want more info, call Roger at x4993 or email rsmith02@wesleyan.edu
Meeting: Friday 4/23 3pm Olin Library Rare Book Room

Bridging the Gap April 21
Do you feel that there isn't a sense of community among women on campus?  It's time to change that.  Come to a workshop sponsored by the Black Women's Collective, the Women of color Collective, The Feminist Majority, the Women's Resource Center, Womanist House, NuShu, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, GBLOCQ, and more. This sort of thing makes WESUNITY happy.
The gathering is from 7-10PM in the Butt B lounge on Thursday April 22.

Sweatshop Sit-in April 21
UNC students have taken over their administration building.  Here's more info:

CHAPEL HILL- 20 students went into the administration building on the UNC-CH campus today and vow to stay until interim Chancellor McCoy agrees to their demands to help stop the use of sweatshop labor in the production of university apparel. "We have been very patient all year," explained Kea Parker, a sophomore member of Students for Economic Justice (SEJ). "The bottom line is that sweatshop abuses continue and the University is not taking action to stop them."

They seem to be supported by their local SEAC chapter.  You can email a petition to the Chanceller of UNC here.  You can watch the protest live via the web here.

Free Mumia April 21
The Black and Latino Brotherhood is sponsoring a bus to the Mumia Rally in Philadelphia this Saturday.  CT Students Against the Death Penalty had reserved 20 spots on a bus coming from Yale, but due to overwhelming interest, more space was needed.  Here's info from Soyinka Lawoyin of the BLB.

My name is Soyinka Lawoyin. I am a member of the Black and Latino
Brotherhood, and I have benn able to schedule a bus for the Millions for
Mumia rally this Saturday, April 24th in Philadelphia. I recognize that
there is a bus leaving from Yale University, but all of those spots have
been taken. We have space for the first 49 students who want to attend the rally. The price will be $10. Please respond ASAP to slawoyin@wesleyan.edu or call  X4611 or X7060.

Who is this Mumia fellow anyway, and what is all the fuss about?  Visit this website for more information: Millions for Mumia

There will be a ceremony this Wednesday at 8:00 pm in
front of Olin library to recognize the human tragedy currently occurring in the Balkans. Unlike the forum last Wednesday, this event will not be intellectual and will try not to be political. Instead, it will focus on the suffering which war brings, and try to relate some part of that suffering to participants.

End Sanctions and Bombings April 19
Meredith Lobel, all-purpose social justice activist, wants Wesleyan to take a stand against the bombing of Kosovo and the sanctions on Iraq. Here's more info.

The New York Times will be publishing an advertisement this spring taken out by Chomsky, Angela Davis, Howard Zinn, etc. which calls for an end of the sanctions against Iraq. and we, yes lil' Wes, can attach our names in support of that ad if i am able to collect enough petitions showing student body support and convince the WSA (who are actually rather willing if there is the student support) to pass a resolution calling for the end of the sanctions, to notify our gov't reps.of our opinion, and agree to be part of the NYT ad.
People are still dying there and the US is still bombing and 'sanctioning' there-- but the issue is even more eclipsed (somewhat rightfully) by the kosovo situation. If you want to sign and more importantly, can collect signatures, PLEASE E-MAIL ME BACK (just say 'i want to help' and where you live, box #, and phone#) and i will get back to you.
We have ONE WEEK to get signatures. next week is also the nat'l student week of protest against the sanctions.

BOOM! April 19
I don't know who did this, but someone riled up the locals.  The Middletown Press wrote today, "Explosion May be Campus Prank"  Here's a bit of info from the article:

MIDDLETOWN -- Two explosions about 15 seconds
apart resounded through the city Sunday night, their source
tracked to what was most likely a student prank.
Police, hearing the blasts at about 9:50 p.m., began
searching immediately, quickly zeroing in on the
Wesleyan University campus.
Where commencement ceremonies are held, at the
campus' Foss Hill and Andrus Field area, police found the
culprit -- two Coca-Cola bottles filled with nitrogen,
according to scanner reports -- at the commencement
podium.

ACTION ALERT!
Hartford Needs Good Union Jobs Monday, April 19 at 6:45 pm,
City Hall, 550 Main St. The state, city and private developers are pouring about $1 billion of development into a stadium, hotels, a retail complex, but what about Hartford residents? If the only permanent jobs are service sector jobs, they have to be decent jobs. Otherwise developers get rich and Hartford residents get poorer. Community groups and SEIU and HERE are joining together at the public hearing before the city council meeting to call for union jobs for Hartord residents.

School of the Americas April 12
Today is a Wesleyan Peace Action day of action against the terrorist-training, US government funded School of the Americas.

Wesleyan Peace Action is sponsoring an awareness day at Wesleyan about the
School of the Americas on Monday, April 12th, in honor of National
Student Lobby Day Against the School of the Americas.
This US Army school in Georgia, funded by US tax dollars, trains Latin
American soldiers in military tactics. Graduates of the SOA have been
responsible for some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. The
SOA manuals recommend interrogation techniques like
torture, execution,
blackmail, and arresting the relatives of those being questioned
.
Peace Action is circulating a petition among Wesleyan students to close the
SOA. This petition will be sent to Connecticut Congressman Sam Gejdenson.
Students may sign the petition at tables at Mocon during lunch on Monday or
next to the banner on the wall in the campus center first floor.
For more information about the SOA visit http://www.soaw.org or to get
involved with Peace Action, contact me at hporsche@wesleyan.edu or call
X5852.

Labor Conference April 10
Next weekend, we're lucky enough to have a huge labor conference (SAWSJ - Scholars, Artists, and Writers for Social Justice) at Yale, right in our backyard.  Are you at all interested in labor issues, in corporate responsibility, or in workers' rights?  The speaker list for this event reads like a who's who list of today's labor movement.  You bet USLAC will be there, and will help get you a ride there.  Contact Nina Haiman at 638-3658 for ride information. No Updates April 10
Sorry about the recent dearth of updates.  Lot of school work, among other things.  The WESUNITY site relaunch is also slowing things down.  News will no longer be the central focus of the site, as Time-Out Wesleyan Online will take care of publicizing social events.   We're still hammering out what exactly each site will cover (is a party for a political cause social or political? How about earthweek?)  WESUNITY's news page will still provide a place for activism news, to ask for help from other groups, to publicize non-Wesleyan speeches and conferences, for unrecognized groups to post news, for groups to combine explanations of events with links to news articles or pictures, and to let others know about the nature of your group and your projects, even if you don't have a formal event.  Look for an expanded resource center.

Reminder: if you have ANY
research papers relevant to student groups, or that are just plain interesting, get them published on the WESUNITY site, or in the Primer.  Email them to wesunity@wesleyan.edu or campus mail them to box 5171.

Watch out, because times and places may change.
Here's a temporary QA webpage.

F**ed up Article April 10
Ever thought about not saluting the flag?  Hear a variety of stupid arguments on both sides.  Really quite amusing if you read it slowly and savor the stupidity.   Read it here. Don't believe me?  Read this sample:

Liias said those who misbehave during the pledge
should be punished. "There are worse things we
could be asking them to do
," he said. "We could
be asking them to sing the national anthem."

At Seattle's Garfield High School, the pledge is
recited only before assemblies or sports events,
said Linda Rolfson, activity coordinator. "By the
time kids are in high school, they're thinking more
on their own.
They're not quite so willing to just
blindly do what we want them to do
," Rolfson
said.

Cannabis Coalition April 3
Fight the war on drugs. End ridiculous drug sentencing. Do all this and more every Wednesday night at 10:30 in the basement of the campus center. All are welcome to come. Here's a bit more info. For the whole thing, click here:

The Cannabis Coalition is a new WSA-sponsored group.
The objectives of the Wesleyan Cannabis Coalition are to raise
awareness of the draconian laws surrounding the use of cannabis and work
with existing national groups to help change these laws. We will strive to
bring Wesleyan students into the already flourishing international movement for the legalization of cannabis for industrial, medicinal and recreational purposes.
Presently, the Cannabis Coalition is planning a
party to promote
awareness of its existence on April 20 and a trip to Amherst's Extravaganja
on April 24, as well as participation in
Zonker Harris Day
at WestCo on
April 17.
