| Dispelling Frat Misconceptions |
BY ROGER SMITH Dear Pete Ajemian, Im glad you took the time to write about the daily discrimination and injustice endured by a forgotten minority: the campus athlete. I would like to help you combat ignorant stereotypes, and to help people break out of their isolated cliques. As a campus activist, I am sensitive to your plight, just as I am to the brutal slaying of bunny rabbits and those berry pickers weve heard so much about. As you know, while fraternities are about having fun, they are also about brotherhood, and Im sure you look out for your fellow DKE brother. In the same way, fraternities are known for their community service for expanding this brotherhood to the whole of humanity. I would like to help you live up to your ideals of fraternity, transcend the unfair characterizations of "jocks" (which you spelled out so well in your Wespeak), and give something back to the community. I know how hard it is to find good service projects, so I invite you to join campus activists in their local campaigns. Most of us would gladly welcome helping hands. While not much is happening yet, as the semester is young, you can keep up with what is going on by checking out http://www.wesleyan.edu/wesunity. This doesnt just apply to DKE, but to every fraternity and sorority on campus. And everyone else as well. I hope to work with you soon. Smith is a member of the class of 2001. |
