The Cannabis Coalition is a new WSA-sponsored group. The group has
a long battle ahead of it. It is fighting the so-called American drug war,
which has led to countless needless deaths, broken families, blatant civil
rights neglect and hundreds of billions of wasted dollars.
Group members believe the the "drug war" is a specifically
important topic because it is intrinsically tied to a vast number of other
injustices. The focus of the Cannabis Coalition is on cannabis itself, the
prime target of the war on drugs. The Coalition will be working with other
regional and national organizations, such as National Organization for the
Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and Students for a Sensible Drug Policy,
towards achieving its goals. The group has issued the following
mission statement to the WSA:
"The objectives of the Wesleyan Cannabis Coalition are to raise
awareness of the draconian laws surrounding the use of cannabis and work
with existing national groups to help change these laws. We will strive to
bring Wesleyan students into the already flourishing international movement
for the legalization of cannabis for industrial, medicinal and recreational
purposes."
Presently, the Cannabis Coalition is planning a party to promote
awareness of its existence on April 20 and a trip to Amherst's Extravaganja
on April 24, as well as participation in Zonker Harris Day at WestCo on
April 17. The group meets on Wednesday nights at 10:30 in the basement of
the campus center. All are welcome to come.
