Some hecklers disrupted the speech.
The conference at Wesleyan University on the domestic impact of foreign affairs began early Saturday morning. Secretary of State Albright arrived Saturday afternoon to speak on the campus. Outside she was met by more than 100 protesters trying to send a strong message to end the sanctions against Iraq.
Inside, Albright received a warm welcome, but before she could begin her speech more protesters disrupted her. Hecklers were removed and Albright was clearly angered. Once she was able to begin her speech, she discussed economics, security and democracy. She praised the people of Connecticut for their Yankee ingenuity and exports. Albright also discussed the crisis in Kosovo, promising no ground troops unless, “There must be an agreement between the parties. Europe must provide a lion’s share of any peace keeping force and the military mission must be clear.”

Albright did meet with some Iraq protestors after her speech.
After the speech, there were mixed reviews. “It was a good speech, I liked it,” Herbert Levine of Middletown said. “Definitely like to hear about Iraq which is what has been a focus of today but she seemed to really deliberately skirt that,” Wesleyan Sophomore Lindsey Fransen said. Secretary Albright did follow through on her promise to talk to some protesters about Iraq after the speech. “And she said, yes, I feel sorry for those people’s lives and she says she feels more sorry than perhaps other people do and she does have a heart, that is clear,” Wesleyan Sophomore Meredith Lobel said.
After Saturday’s visit to the Wesleyan campus, Secretary Albright made her way back to Washington, D.C.
