Yoga @ Wesleyan

Toni Craige '09
Toni Craige is a Kripalu certified yoga teacher. She has practiced in other disciplines, including Anusara, Ashtanga and Bikram and is also influenced by her experiences as a dancer.  Toni can be contacted by email at acraige@wesleyan.edu.

 

Shayna Keller '09
Shayna was certified through Yoga Works last summer, and has taught private and group lessons at Wholisticenter in Los Angeles.  Her primary interest is the investigation of movement and its therapeutic applications.  She is very grateful for the opportunity to teach and learn with her peers this semester.  Shayna can be contacted by email at sdkeller@wesleyan.edu.

 

Jessica Posner '09
Jessica is an AFPA certified yoga instructor and offers an invigorating and inspiring Vinyassa Power Yoga class. This is Jessica’s second year teaching yoga for WesWELL.  She has also taught in Denver, Colorado.  She looks forward to sharing the strength and serenity that she has found through yoga with others.   Jessica can be reached by email at jrposner@wesleyan.edu.

 

Amy Tate
Amy Tate, M.Ed., RYT Yoga Alliance, PhD candidate, has fifteen years experience of hatha-yoga practice and five plus years of teaching. She has taught in various settings in the greater Boston community including Lesley University, Franciscan Hospital for Children, Cambridge Eating Disorder Center, the Brimmer and May School and Sol y Luna Yoga Studio. She holds a Kripalu certification and is currently interested in the various teaching methodologies of the Krishnamacharya lineage, including the Iyengar method. Amy’s teaching is informed by her ongoing explorations in Body-Mind Centering, experiential anatomy, and improvisational dance. Amy can be reached by email at atate@lesley.edu

 

Emma Teitel '09
Emma Teitel is a certified Hatha Yoga insructor through the International Sivananda Ashram Organization. She has lived at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram and has studied closely with swamis of the Sivananda lineage. The Hatha Yoga flow is designed to increase flexibility, muscular strength, and concentration of the mind, while simultaneously reducing stress and anxiety. Yoga classes will involve breathing techniques, traditional Yoga postures, and integrated meditations that will balance the body, calm the mind, and invite overall well-being into daily life. Small Forest Temple Training

Sharisse Kanet '06
Sharisse Kanet is a resident Priest-in-Training, a graduate of Wesleyan University (2006), who is a PhD student in philosophy at the City University of New York. Sharisse was also a level 1 student at Wesleyan for all four years and took priest’s vows in 2006 upon graduation.

 

Ji Myong
Ji Myong, the Temple Master of the Small Forest Temple. Ji Myong is the name given by Grand Master Seung Sahn in the traditional manner to his disciple (original name Anthony Scionti) who began as a student of martial-arts since 1970 under the authority of Master Infererra and Grand Master Shimabuku, and whose black belt standing is recognized by the All-Japan Empty-Handed Way Association and registered with the Tokyo Police, as required by Japanese law, and then (1975) by Grand Master Seung Sahn, transmitting the Original Way of Shaolin, Anthony holds an M.S. in Counseling, is a certified School Psychologist, therapist and private counselor. He has led numerous workshops and conferences in both private and public sectors in psychology, self-guidance, spiritual growth, meditation and self-healing training. Stephanie Reedy
Stephanie Reedy is a full time Priest-in-Training who is also a certified herbalist and an art teacher. Her specific interest is Temple spiritual training as the foundation for her spiritual-herbalist practice.

 

Joshua Wilson '00
Joshua Wilson is the Head Priest-in-Training, and Head Resident priest of the temple.  He has been training as a priest full-time in all aspects of the Way of Shaolin for eight years and as a Level II student during his senior year of college. Josh holds a B.A. in Religious Studies from Wesleyan University ‘00, where he was awarded the Trench Prize for Excellence in the Study of Religion. Hung Ga Five Animal Kung Fu

David Wolovsky ’10
David has studied Yee’s Hung Ga for over five years in Brooklyn, NY with his Sifu, or master, Peter Berman Yee. David is an instructor at the school and has seen first-hand the benefits of this style. He is fifth generation from Wong Fei Hung, a renowned Kung Fu hero of China. David has earned gold medals in several Kung Fu tournaments including the Northeastern Wong Fei Hung all Kung Fu Championship. He recommends this class for any student with motivation. Be ready to work, sweat, and enjoy.

Off-Campus Class Instructors

Sheila Bunnell (Yoga in Middletown)
Sheila Bunnell has been a student of Yoga since 1998, and is currently studying to become an Iyengar Yoga Instructor with Joan White in Philadelphia. Besides being on the Yoga in Middletown faculty she has been teaching yoga to teenagers at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven since 2004. She has also taught yoga in the Middletown Public Schools and for Youth and Family Services.

 

Julie Deak (Nia Technique)
Julie has more than 15 years of experience in offering dynamic workshops and education programs to adults and children. She blends her knowledge of human development and life cycles, complimentary medicine, and diverse spirituality to offer sessions that promote self healing, awareness, health and well being.  For the last 6 years she has worked with movement as her primary modality and is certified in The Nia Technique at the Black Belt level. Julie can be contacted by email at juliedeak@comcast.net or by calling 860.347.1825.

 

Sandra Kopell (Yoga in Middletown)
Sandra Kopell, RYT Yoga Alliance, MALS, Studio Director, began the Yoga in Middletown program in 1991. She is a graduate of the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Center's Teacher Training Program in Somerville, MA where she studied with Patricia Walden and Peentz Dubble. She is certified to teach by the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA. Her teachng is informed by three decades immersion in movement and mind/body studies that include the practice and teaching of yoga, modern dance, choreography, dance improvisation, anatomy and kinesiology, and massage therapy.
