Course Description

Temple Lineage Shaolin Kung Fu: Shaolin Southern Tiger Style - Level 1 Training

This is training in traditional combat arts, the development of self, and the cultivation of personal life skills.

The classic Kung Fu is “The Expertise”- the expertise of living. Temple Lineage Shaolin Kung Fu, in addition to being one of the most effective combat forms, is a study of life, of who you are and how life works. It is an unchanged teaching of practical and spiritual wisdom which we regard as inseparable. Taken with respect and sincerity this is a doorway to a very ancient and authentic wisdom.  This training is hard work yet also a good time, a model of life itself.

The temple teaching of martial arts is in fact a physical demonstration and experience of how life works. This is training in traditional combat arts, the development of self, and the cultivation of personal life skills. Shaolin temple practice emphasizes the internal. This is how and why martial arts have been taught in temples. All sparring is full-contact with protective gear—this is about reality.  This is not modern Wu Shu, performance or sports martial arts.

The first year is designed to be independent in itself. For students who do not wish to attain advanced training, upon completing their first year, they will have:

1) the basic principles, skills and ability of self-defense
2) an understanding of the Natural Law expressed in Temple Martial Arts as a blueprint for success in life, and
3) insight into the cultivation of personal character and self-fulfillment.

The purpose of the first year of training for ongoing students is to cultivate the skills and understanding required for the rank of Blue Sash. Level of expertise is denoted by four ranks: white sash, blue sash, brown sash, and black sash. This signifies having developed an appreciable grasp of the fundamental building blocks of Temple Kung Fu practice: Martial Arts as Life Expertise.

Section 1 (for Beginning students): $145, including uniform & patch

The agenda, which follows the requirements for being awarded Blue sash, are as follows:

Offer a complete explanation and demonstration of:

  • Correct sitting and moving meditation practice
  • Warm-up and preparatory health and strengthening exercises
  • Basic history, Philosophy and Way of life, and the Fundamental Philosophy of the Tai Chi
  • The fighting stances and their uses: original, crane, cat, cross, natural, horse, squat, sitting, and lying stances
  • Moving in stances
  • Basic blocks, parries, and evasions: Inside and Outside, high, middle, low with the three hand positions
  • Releasing techniques and basic defensive drills

Section 2 (for Returning students with at least one semester of training): $125

  • Fundamentals of throws and rolls, controlling the challenger
  • Basic drills continued
  • Forward and side hand strikes and forward, side, and rear kicks
  • Basic principles of throws, take-downs and throws
  • Defensive techniques including releases, blocks, parries, traps, counterstrikes, take downs, and throws
  • Break a 1” board with left and right palm strikes and heel strikes

Note: Both courses are available in Fall and Spring semesters; there is no need to specify which course when registering.

More in depth training, in all disciplines, is taught only at the temple.  Any Level I student (Wesleyan student) can intensify and broaden their practice by training as a Level II student.  Please view the Temple website for more information.
