Vinyasa Yoga - All Levels (Jessica Brownfeld)
Yoga 1: Sundays @ 4:00pm

Description
Jess' class will incorporate the asanas (physical poses), pranayama (breathing exercises), and brief meditations. By using these tools, students at any level can unite the body, mind, and spirit. From this union will come increased strength, flexibility, energy, and relaxation. Along with presence of mind, Jess' class will focus on body awareness as well as development of the connection between practicing yoga on the mat and practicing the spirit of yoga in everyday life. ALL levels are welcome!

Level
This is an all-levels class which is tailored to meet the needs of any level of yoga student. Pose modifications for beginning students and intermediate students will be included. Beginning students with no experience are welcome, though they may find an all-levels class slightly more challenging.

Instructor
Jessica Brownfeld '10 is a senior dance major who was certified to teach yoga last summer at Blue Moon Yoga in Shrewsbury, NJ. She has been teaching since then, and also served as a mentor for Blue Moon's 2009 Summer Intensive Teacher Training. She is very interested in connections between practicing/teaching yoga and her work in the dance major, as well as connections between yoga and her everyday life. Vinyassa Power Yoga - All Levels (Jessica Posner)
Yoga 2: Sundays @ 5:00pm
Yoga 6: Thursdays @ 4:30pm

Description
Gone is the myth that yoga is boring or that it's simply stretching in a quiet room. A Power Yoga class combines heat, music, breath and movement for an intense and energizing experience. If you're looking to increase strength and flexibility, lose weight, manage stress, or just find out what the buzz is about, you'll see why so many people are hooked on this extraordinary workout! Power yoga is high energy and torches calories.

Vinyassa Power Yoga is an incredible, unique program that combines strength, sweat and spirituality. It heals, detoxifies and exhilarates the mind and body. Through synchronizing body movement with breath, power yoga facilitates increased physical vitality, Power Yoga strives to unite the body, mind and spirit and its many benefits include: increased muscle tone, weight loss, balance, agility, strength, sense of self, stress-relief and focus. This class will work both your body as well as your mind with a vigorous asana practice and integrated meditation.

Level

Instructor
Jessica Posner '09 began practicing yoga in 2004. She is an AFPA certified yoga instructor. This is her fourth year teaching at Wesleyan. Jessica has studied extensively at Corepower Yoga. She offers an invigorating and inspiring Vinyassa Power Yoga class that synchronizes breath with movement, allowing students to achieve meditation in motion. She enjoys helping her students reach new levels of fitness, flexibility, calm and confidence. She has also taught yoga and served as a yoga mentor around the world. Kripalu Slow Flow Yoga - All Levels (Rachel Shopper)
Yoga 3: Tuesdays @ 4:30pm

Description
Kripalu yoga is a dynamic and transformative spiritual practice of meditation in motion that empowers, detoxifies, and increases vitality.   The Sanskrit word for “unity”, yoga is a practice of bringing the body, mind, and spirit into balance and connecting to source energy and joy in the present moment. Kripalu yoga has a special commitment to honor everyone’s unique abilities build, and pace. Rachel’s class moves students through a mindful flow based on a blend of Ashtanga vinyasa sequences and more static meditative poses (asanas), with particular focus on sensation and proper alignment. She will also cover breathing techniques (pranayamas) and brief meditation exercises.  

These rejuvenating practices cultivate fitness, clarity, body-wisdom, authenticity and grace.  In this class, Rachel will also pay particular attention to the philosophies that form the spiritual foundation to the practice.  The skills we learn on the yoga mat allow us to identify, accept, and ultimately overcome hindrances to our greatest human potential.  These positive effects radiate out into all aspects of our life.  Whether you are just beginning to explore yoga or have been working with it for some years, this is an opportunity to explore the delicious edge of your practice! Students may want to bring a towel to class.

Level
This class will be taught with more static, long-holding poses and at a lower temperature than Rachel’s Hot Flow class, although the room will still be heated. Particular attention will be paid to yogic philosophy.

Instructor
Rachel Shopper '10 is a Kripalu certified yoga instructor and has additionally been studying Ashtanga power yoga for over 8 years.  She has taught yoga in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Ecuador to preschoolers, adolescents, college students and adults.  This will be her second year teaching at Wesleyan.  Rachel is committed to teaching a safe and supportive class that challenges her students to push their limits and uncover their innate bliss.  She is so grateful for all that her students have taught her and for the opportunity to watch yoga transform and enliven the lives of others.  Rachel can be reached by email at rshopper@wesleyan.edu.

 

Kripalu Hot Flow Yoga - All Levels (Rachel Shopper)
Yoga 7: Thursdays @ 5:30pm

Description

Level
This class will be taught at a high temperature and will be fairly vigorous, although there will be plenty of modifications offered. If you are a beginner and wish to take this class, please contact Rachel beforehand.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga - Some Experience Needed (Christina Boyd)
Yoga 4: Tuesdays @ 6:00pm

Description
This class will serve as an introduction to the primary series in the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice. This series is a flow of invigorating postures and transitions designed to focus the breath, stop our mental chatter, and turn our gaze inward to reach a state of personal strength and contentment. We will be sweating and pushing our limits, and also focusing on the pranayama (breath work), that is so vital to this practice. Some experience with yoga/ movement is preferred for this class, but don't hesitate to come and challenge yourself! My intention is to provide every student with a comfortable and strong practice they can continue long after the semester is over.

Level
Some Experience Necessary indicates a class designed for those with some previous yoga experience and which would not be appropriate for absolute beginners.

Instructor
Christina Boyd '10, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, has been practicing yoga and meditation for several years, deepening her practice while living at Buddhist House at Wesleyan and completing a life-changing yoga teacher training in 2008. She has also had training in Reiki healing, bodywork, tantra, and dance, and is passionate about sharing her experiences and continuing to learn through teaching! Vigorous Vinyasa Yoga - Intermediate (Jessica Brownfeld)
Yoga 5: Wednesdays @ 5:00pm

Description
In a Vinyasa class, the breath drives all movement. By using pranayama (breathing exercises) in conjunction with the asanas (physical postures), strength and flexibility will build. Students will leave with a calmer mind and an energized body. Just what is needed to take on all those papers and meetings! This class is designed for students at an intermediate level of yoga practice. Since this can cover a large range of experience, please email Jessica at jbrownfeld@wesleyan.edu with any questions!

Level
This is an intermediate class, which is designed for previous students in Wesleyan yoga classes, and for those with other previous yoga experience (at least two classes).

Levels

  • Beginning classes are geared to those with little or no experience in yoga.
  • Some Experience Necessary indicates a class designed for those with some previous yoga experience and which would not be appropriate for absolute beginners.
  • All Levels classes are tailored to meet the needs of any level of yoga student. Pose modifications for beginning students and intermediate students will be included. Beginning students with no experience are welcome and should not be intimidated, even though they may find an all-levels class slightly more challenging.
  • Intermediate/Advanced classes are designed for previous students in Wesleyan yoga classes, and for those with other previous yoga experience (at least two classes).
