Welcome to the first edition of HealthierU for the 2006 - 2007
academic year!
We look forward to sharing new health information and ideas with
you each Wednesday If you have suggestions for health topics you
would like to see covered, please email Lisa Currie at weswell@wesleyan.edu.
Also, if you have a health-oriented event which is open to the
campus community, please send complete details to Lisa by the
Tuesday afternoon before the event so it may be included in
Wednesday's edition. More than 170 people interested in health
issues subscribe to the list (so far!) and we're adding more every
day.
If you wish to unsubscribe at any time, instructions for doing so
are appended to the end of each message. If you have problems,
please contact Lisa Currie at weswell@wesleyan.edu

Healthy Dose of Info
Love incense? It's healthier to avoid the smoke from burning
incense.
According to the UC-Berkeley Wellness Letter, while there is no
solid evidence that the smoke from incense has adverse health
effects, it does contain some potent pollutants, notably benzene,
toluene, and formaldehyde, which are known carcinogens also found in
tobacco smoke. And it pollutes the air with fine particles that can
be inhaled and can contribute to cardio-respiratory disease.
Therefore, it's important to take into consideration if your
roommate or friend has asthma or other respiratory disorder or even
a fragrance sensitivity. Ask before you light it up! (More info at
www.wellnessletter.com)
Note: Due to fire safety concerns, the burning of incense is NOT
allowed in residential living areas or common areas, including
porches.
