Tips for a Healthier You

Sore throat?
A sore throat isn't a disease. Most often, it's a symptom of another illness — such as the common cold or the flu, according to the Mayo Clinic. In many cases, a sore throat is the first indication that you're getting sick...

Breast Cancer Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Read up at Susan G. Komen for the Cure to learn more, including details about early detection and screening...

What is seasonal affective disorder?
Some people find that their moods shift with the seasons. The most common pattern is a depressed mood in the fall or winter (as the days get shorter) and an improvement in mood in the spring (with the return of longer days and more daylight). However, a few people have the opposite pattern — they get depressed in the summer....

A Healthy Dose of Info on...Experiencing Weight Gain

Many of us, at some point in our lives, will experience this phenomenon. It may come as fast as overnight, or creep on over several months. At first, you notice your favorite pair of jeans beginning to feel snug. This is easy to blow off thinking “I did have a huge meal last night for dinner and a piece (or two) of chocolate cake”. So rather than worry, you keep the jeans on feeling the breath knocked out of you each time you sit down.

After breakfast, you manage to drink a large non-fat vanilla latte before your first class starts, telling yourself “it was non-fat therefore I am officially being ‘good’.” You sit through class feeling the pangs of regret, and at this point have checked out of the Biology lecture. You make yourself promises to never eat like that again, to make changes, and to start today! If only it were that easy. Two hours later, your friend calls and asks you to join her for lunch, and the same overeating habits re-surface.

At this point you do one of two things: you continue to notice your clothes beginning to tighten and bulge more than usual--and ignore it, or you decide to seek nutritional healthy guidance from Bon Appétit’s on Campus Dietitian, Missy Davis. (a free service for students)

There are many ways you can use Bon Appétit’s Nutritional Services:

Nutrition Lectures: Have a club or group that desires to learn more about Nutrition, Health, and Wellness? Missy Davis gives group lectures on general and overall Health and Wellness. A very informative lecture that includes the basics of nutrition, up-to-date information on specific topics such as trans fats, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, obesity, ‘Fad’ diets, caffeine and stress, and weight loss/gain.

One-on-One Healthy Eating Counseling: Feel like a group setting may not be for you? One-on-One weight management and healthy eating counseling is available for students. A few sessions with a Dietitian and your on your way to better health.

Nutrition & Wellness ‘Hot Topics’: To be offered starting in October. Once a month, a ‘Hot Topics’ of nutrition meeting/booth will take place at Usdan, presented by Dietitian Missy Davis. This is for those interested in more in depth topics of Health and Wellness such as Freshman 15: Myth or Reality, Vegetarianism, Supplements, Weight gain/loss, Glycemic Index and Exercise, and other wellness related topics.

Bon Appetit offers the services of a nutritionist to interested students. For more information or to set up an appointment, please contact: Missy Davis, Dietitian for Bon Appétit at Wesleyan, (860) 685-3615 (ext 3615) or mdavis01@wesleyan.edu
