Peer Health Advocates
Peer Education
Peer education is a highly effective and rapidly growing
movement on campuses around the world. Several student-led peer education groups
collaborate with the WesWELL staff regularly to
address a variety of health issues.
Together with student leaders and community educators, the professional staff of
WesWELL assists with the training of peer educators who then create educational
outreach workshops and awareness events.
The BACCHUS
Network
Wesleyan University's Peer Health Advocates are an affiliate of The BACCHUS Network. BACCHUS is
a university and community based network focusing on comprehensive health and
safety initiatives. It is the mission of this non-profit organization to
actively promote student and young adult based, campus and community-wide
leadership on healthy and safe lifestyle decisions concerning alcohol abuse,
tobacco use, illegal drug use, unhealthy sexual practices and other high-risk
behaviors. Affiliation
with the network affords student peer educators with opportunities to network
with other peer education groups through national and regional conferences and
electronic means, and
to develop new peer-led educational outreach activities based on the latest research in
the field.
Wesleyan University is located in Area 10, one of 12 regions
established by BACCHUS, which covers Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Lisa Currie, the Director of Health
Education, also serves as a volunteer Area 10 Consultant.

WSA-recognized Peer Education Groups
WesWELL strives to cultivate and maintain working relationships with several peer
health education groups and other student organizations at
Wesleyan, though they are Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) recognized student
organizations. Students interested in joining
a peer education program are encouraged to contact
the groups directly; contact information for these and other student
organizations is available on the
WSA website.
Peer
Health Advocates
Housed in WesWELL, the Peer Health Advocates
are a group of dedicated Wesleyan students who develop and implement peer-led
health education efforts.
Under the direction of the Peer Health Advocate Team Leaders, they collaborate with
other
student groups and offices on campus to develop health promotion activities and
events which support the mission of WesWELL.
